CVE-2026-8933 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in snap-confine, the snapd component responsible for constructing the execution environment for snap applications. The issue affects deployments where snap-confine is installed with Linux file capabilities instead of the traditional setuid-root model. In the vulnerable configuration, snap-confine executes with the calling user’s effective UID while retaining powerful capabilities, creating a privilege-boundary mismatch during sandbox initialization. This causes files and directories created during setup to be briefly owned or controllable by the unprivileged user before ownership is corrected, exposing exploitable race windows. Reported exploitation paths abuse these time-of-check/time-of-use conditions during temporary directory and file creation, including symlink-assisted redirection of privileged file writes and subsequent placement of attacker-controlled rules in a location later processed by a root-run service. Successful exploitation allows arbitrary command execution as root.
