Earth Kurma is an advanced persistent threat group conducting cyberespionage against government and government-related telecommunications organizations in Southeast Asia. Activity has been observed since at least November 2020, with a prominently documented campaign from June 2024. Confirmed targeting includes the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia. Its primary objective is collection and exfiltration of sensitive information. Earth Kurma employs custom loaders, credential-harvesting malware, Cobalt Strike, network-discovery utilities, remote-execution tooling, and kernel-mode rootkits including KRNRAT and MORIYA. It performs host and network reconnaissance, remote command execution, and lateral movement using WMI, administrative shares, and supporting tools. KMLOG captures keystrokes and credentials. Loaders execute follow-on payloads in memory, while the rootkits provide persistence, process manipulation, traffic concealment, shellcode execution, and evasion of endpoint defenses. The group collects common office documents, compresses and password-protects them, and stages them through Active Directory Distributed File System Replication to support access from domain controllers. It uses bespoke uploaders to exfiltrate archives through legitimate cloud-storage services, including Dropbox and OneDrive. Earth Kurma has tooling and code overlaps with ToddyCat and Operation TunnelSnake, but available evidence does not support conclusive attribution to either group.
