Marbled Dust is a Türkiye-affiliated espionage threat actor associated with cyber operations aligned with Turkish state interests. The group overlaps with activity tracked by other vendors as Sea Turtle and UNC1326. It has historically targeted government institutions and other organizations whose interests conflict with those of the Turkish government. Marbled Dust has conducted credential interception and follow-on intrusion activity using techniques such as DNS hijacking, typosquatting, and scanning of internet-facing infrastructure for exploitable vulnerabilities. In a notable evolution of its tradecraft, the group exploited CVE-2025-27920, a zero-day directory traversal vulnerability in Output Messenger, to target the Kurdish military in Iraq. In that campaign, the actor obtained authenticated access, abused the vulnerability to deploy malicious scripts and Go-based backdoors on both server and Windows client components, executed commands, and exfiltrated user data. Reported post-compromise behavior included staged malware execution, persistence via startup mechanisms, and collection of files from victim systems. The group’s operations are consistent with intelligence collection rather than financially motivated crime, with a focus on surveillance of geopolitical adversaries and sensitive government-related targets.
