RTM is a Russian-speaking financially motivated cybercrime group best known for banking-trojan operations against organizations in Russia and for later expanding into ransomware and data-extortion activity. The group has targeted organizations in the financial and transportation sectors and has used phishing and spearphishing attachments to gain execution on victim systems. RTM is associated with the RTM banking trojan and has conducted campaigns in which initial access was followed by attempts to identify accounting-related systems and interfere with remote banking workflows by altering payment details. RTM has established persistence through Windows Registry Run keys and has also abused DLL search order hijacking to force legitimate remote administration software to load malicious code. The group has used modified versions of TeamViewer as well as Remote Utilities, and reporting also links RTM operations to the use of legitimate remote administration tools for persistence, remote access, and follow-on activity inside victim environments. In campaigns active from late 2020, RTM combined banking fraud with contingency monetization paths: when direct banking theft failed, operators deployed the Quoter ransomware to encrypt reachable systems, and if that also failed, they escalated to data-theft extortion by claiming possession of confidential information and threatening public release. This progression reflects a hybrid criminal model spanning credentialed intrusion, remote access, persistence, lateral movement, ransomware deployment, and extortion.
