Kimsuky is a North Korea-aligned cyber-espionage threat actor known for targeting academic institutions, non-profit organizations, and other entities of intelligence interest. The name Stolen Pencil was used for an activity cluster later revoked in favor of Kimsuky, indicating the cluster is assessed to overlap with or represent the same actor. The group has conducted spear-phishing campaigns designed to steal credentials and maintain persistent access, including operations that abused a malicious Google Chrome extension to capture saved browser passwords and cookies. In observed campaigns, victims were lured through spoofed academic-themed websites and phishing emails, with follow-on activity including email-forwarding rules on compromised accounts to preserve access and monitor victim communications. Kimsuky has been associated with credential theft from web browsers, theft of browser cookies and sessions, and PowerShell-based keylogging. Reported capabilities include capturing keystrokes, harvesting credentials stored in browsers, and maintaining access after compromise. The actor’s targeting and tradecraft are consistent with intelligence collection rather than financially motivated crime. Available reporting ties the actor to North Korea and links its operations to long-running espionage activity focused in part on academia and research communities.
