The National Security Agency (NSA) is a United States intelligence and cyber operations organization. In cyber operations reporting it is associated with offensive and intelligence capabilities and is frequently referenced alongside other US national security entities such as US Cyber Command and the Central Intelligence Agency. Publicly attributed operations linked to US government cyber activity and discussed in connection with NSA include the Stuxnet/Olympic Games campaign against Iran’s nuclear program and Glowing Symphony against ISIS media infrastructure. NSA is therefore best characterized as a state cyber actor supporting national security and intelligence objectives, with capabilities spanning reconnaissance, initial access, post-exploitation, defense evasion, and disruptive cyber effects. Reporting also places NSA among the agencies involved in broader US military and interagency operations where cyber effects may be used in conjunction with kinetic or electronic warfare activities. Known aliases include NSA and National Security Agency.
