UNK_CraftyCamel is a highly targeted threat cluster first observed in late 2024 conducting spearphishing operations against organizations in the United Arab Emirates. Reported targeting focused on aerospace, aviation, satellite communications, satellite navigation, and critical transportation infrastructure. The actor used a compromised third-party business email account to deliver tailored lures, indicating deliberate target selection and trust-abuse for initial access. The cluster is notable for a multi-stage infection chain using uncommon polyglot files and a disguised shortcut file to launch malicious content. Its tooling included a newly identified Go-based backdoor known as Sosano. Sosano was designed for remote command execution, directory enumeration and manipulation, and retrieval of additional payloads, supporting sustained post-compromise activity and data access. The malware also incorporated anti-analysis measures, including randomized sleep behavior, and the intrusion chain established persistence through registry-based mechanisms. Observed tradecraft shows emphasis on phishing-based initial access, defense evasion through file format deception and malware bloating, persistence, and post-exploitation via a custom backdoor. The actor has also demonstrated the ability to leverage compromised trusted infrastructure in support of operations. No direct overlap with other established clusters has been publicly confirmed, although some reporting has noted possible Iranian-aligned connections based on infrastructure and tactical similarities to activity associated with suspected IRGC-aligned operations. That attribution remains unconfirmed at high confidence, so UNK_CraftyCamel is best treated as a distinct cluster of unknown origin.

Targeted intrusion activity against UAE aerospace and transport-related organizations using a compromised supplier email account and polyglot lure files to deliver a Go backdoor.
Highly targeted email-based espionage campaign in the UAE leveraging a compromised third party (Indian electronics company) and domain impersonation to deliver a multistage polyglot ZIP/LNK/HTA chain that installs a custom Go backdoor (Sosano) and beacons to actor-controlled C2 for tasking and additional payload delivery.
