JavaGhost, also tracked as TGR-UNK-0011, is a threat cluster associated with abuse of misconfigured Amazon Web Services environments. The group has been observed exploiting cloud misconfigurations to gain access to AWS resources and then using services such as Simple Email Service and WorkMail to conduct phishing operations. The available reporting supports cloud-focused initial access through configuration weaknesses and subsequent abuse of legitimate cloud services for malicious activity. Based on the observed use of compromised cloud resources to distribute phishing messages, the actor demonstrates capabilities in initial access, post-exploitation, and defense evasion through living-off-the-land use of native cloud functionality. The currently available information does not establish a high-confidence nation-state attribution, formal sub-group structure, or a broader victimology beyond AWS cloud tenants affected by these operations.
