BARS-15 is a Russian Cossack volunteer battalion formed on 15 May 2022 within Russia’s BARS reserve framework and named after Yermak. It is composed primarily of members drawn from the Volga Cossack Host and has been reported as subordinate to the 15th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade, also known as the Black Hussars, based in Samara Oblast. The unit is part of the broader Russian use of Cossack structures as a mobilization and combat resource in the war against Ukraine. BARS-15 has participated in frontline combat operations in Ukraine, including fighting in Avdiivka and other locations in Donetsk and Luhansk. Reporting links the battalion to mortar operations and conventional ground combat roles rather than covert cyber activity. The battalion has also been associated with political-educational functions inside the unit, including the role of deputy commander for educational work and political officer. The battalion sits within a wider ecosystem in which Russian state-backed Cossack organizations support recruitment, reserve-force generation, and military-patriotic indoctrination. These structures include youth organizations, cadet programs, and educational institutions that channel recruits toward military service. BARS-15 is therefore best understood as a paramilitary and reserve combat formation embedded in Russia’s state-supported Cossack mobilization apparatus for operations in Ukraine.
