An opportunistic post-exploitation threat actor observed during mass exploitation of Microsoft Exchange Server vulnerabilities disclosed in 2021, including ProxyLogon-related flaws such as CVE-2021-26855, CVE-2021-26857, CVE-2021-26858, and CVE-2021-27065. This actor used encoded PowerShell download cradles to retrieve and execute additional malware from remote infrastructure and performed host and network reconnaissance, including use of getmac.exe to enumerate network adapter information. The activity fits a broader pattern of internet-facing Exchange exploitation followed by rapid hands-on-keyboard post-exploitation using native Windows utilities and script interpreters. High-confidence observed behaviors support initial access via exploitation of a public-facing application, ingress tool transfer, reconnaissance, post-exploitation, and defense evasion through use of encoded commands. Attribution to a specific named intrusion set or country is not currently available.
