Sturnus is an Android banking trojan focused on mobile financial fraud and data theft. In addition to typical banking-trojan functionality aimed at compromising victims’ financial information, it has been reported with the capability to extract chats from secure messaging applications including Telegram, Signal, and WhatsApp. This combination indicates an operator interest in both credential and financial theft as well as broader victim surveillance and collection of sensitive communications. Based on currently available information, Sturnus is best characterized as a malware family rather than a clearly attributed intrusion set or named threat actor, and there is insufficient high-confidence evidence to assign it to a specific country, campaign cluster, or victim geography.
