Cameron John Wagenius is a U.S.-based cybercriminal who pleaded guilty to intrusions and extortion affecting at least ten telecommunications and technology companies in the United States. He operated under the aliases kiberphant0m and cyb3rph4nt0m and was associated with activity on criminal forums including BreachForums and XSS. Reported activity occurred during 2023 and 2024 and included collaboration with others. Wagenius used brute-force tooling against remote access services and SIM-swapping techniques to obtain credentials and compromise victim environments. After gaining access, he stole corporate data and used the threat of public disclosure to extort victims, with ransom demands reportedly reaching up to $1 million. The operation therefore combined unauthorized access, credential theft, data exfiltration, and data-theft extortion rather than a traditional encryption-focused ransomware model. Known targeting includes major U.S. telecommunications and technology firms, including AT&T and Verizon. The available facts support a financially motivated criminal profile rather than espionage or hacktivism.
