SamSam was an Iranian ransomware operation active from 2015 that helped establish targeted “big-game hunting” ransomware attacks against critical infrastructure and large organizations. It primarily targeted organizations in the United States and Canada, including government and healthcare entities, conducting disruptive encryption attacks and demanding ransom payments. SamSam was responsible for a 2019 attack on Allscripts, now Veradigm, which caused outages affecting thousands of hospitals. In 2018, U.S. authorities indicted two Iranian nationals for allegedly deploying SamSam against more than 200 victims and causing more than USD 30 million in losses. The operation was financially motivated and used ransomware encryption as its principal extortion mechanism.
