UAC-0050, also tracked in one NetSupport-focused clustering scheme as the XMLCTL campaign, is a threat activity cluster associated with malicious deployment of NetSupport Manager against Ukrainian targets. The cluster has been distinguished from other NetSupport abuse operations by its configuration and infrastructure characteristics, including use of a SecurityKeyU-style configuration field rather than the RADIUSSecret values seen in other clusters, use of a non-standard communication port, and differing file-path conventions. The actor’s operations rely on social-engineering-driven initial access and staged loader execution to install and run NetSupport Manager as a remote access tool. Observed tradecraft in the broader campaign set includes ClickFix-style lures that induce victims to execute commands through the Windows Run dialog, followed by PowerShell-based or MSI-mediated loader chains that decode embedded payloads, write components to hidden directories, establish persistence through the Startup folder, and launch the NetSupport client. Related loader variants have also been observed deleting RunMRU artifacts to reduce forensic visibility of user-executed commands, reflecting deliberate defense-evasion behavior. This activity is best characterized as an intrusion set focused on covert remote access and post-compromise control rather than ransomware or overt extortion. High-confidence reporting links the XMLCTL cluster to targeting of Ukrainians and aligns it with the UAC-0050 designation used for NetSupport-based campaigns. Infrastructure associated with this cluster has included hosting in the United States, but available information supports infrastructure location only, not actor origin. The dominant motivation is consistent with espionage-oriented collection and access operations.
