Catasia is a financially motivated banking threat activity cluster active since at least 2015 and observed in recurring campaigns through 2019. It is primarily associated with attacks against victims in Mexico and is known for targeting online banking users, including Banco Santander customers, with the objective of stealing banking and email credentials and enabling fraudulent account access. Catasia commonly gains initial access through phishing emails that impersonate well-known Mexican organizations, including government and utility entities. Its delivery tradecraft has been characterized by nested compressed archives containing a dated executable or similar payload, a pattern repeatedly associated with this operator set. After execution, the first-stage malware establishes persistence, injects code into legitimate processes, and contacts command-and-control infrastructure capable of rotating among multiple domains for resilience. Later-stage components include a browser-redirection module, also referred to as KeyMoscow or KeyRedir, which retrieves remote configuration to determine banking targets and redirect victims to phishing pages. This stage has also been associated with clipboard monitoring and attempts to weaken host defenses by disabling Windows services. In some operations, Catasia deploys an HVNC hidden remote-control component, enabling covert interactive access to compromised systems for post-compromise fraud activity. The actor’s long-running reuse of infrastructure patterns, delivery structure, and malware behavior indicates a stable operator set rather than isolated campaigns.
