Conti was a Russia-linked cybercriminal ransomware operation associated with the Wizard Spider ecosystem. It is known for high-impact intrusions against large organizations, including critical public-sector and health-care environments. In the 2021 attack on Ireland’s Health Service Executive, the operators gained initial access through a malicious email, remained in the environment for an extended period, used Cobalt Strike for post-compromise control and lateral movement, and deployed a Conti ransomware variant that caused nationwide disruption to health IT services. The operation also stole sensitive data and published victim information online, demonstrating both encryption and data-leak extortion behavior. Conti has been widely tracked under the Conti name, while attribution in this case links the activity to Wizard Spider.
