PAEKTUSAN is a North Korean government-backed threat cluster associated with targeted phishing operations against the aerospace and defense sector. Its activity is consistent with the broader Operation Dream Job tradecraft, using recruiter and human-resources impersonation and job-themed lures to target professionals. Observed operations included impersonating an HR director at a Brazilian aerospace firm to phish employees at another Brazilian aerospace company, and posing as a recruiter at a major U.S. aerospace company to approach targets in Brazil and other regions. PAEKTUSAN has used malicious job-posting documents to deliver malware, including the AGAMEMNON downloader, and has attempted delivery through email as well as social and chat platforms such as WhatsApp. The cluster’s tradecraft demonstrates initial-access phishing, social engineering, malware delivery, and follow-on post-exploitation capability. Its targeting of aerospace and defense personnel aligns with an espionage mission focused on strategically valuable organizations and individuals.
