MagentoCore is a financially motivated cybercriminal threat actor associated with large-scale web skimming and payment-card theft from ecommerce sites. The group has been publicly linked to compromises of thousands of online stores and to digital skimming operations that target checkout workflows rather than endpoint malware deployment. Its activity is consistent with Magecart-style ecommerce fraud, including the use of fake payment overlays and other browser-side mechanisms to capture payment data entered by customers. Observed tradecraft includes localized fake payment forms, so-called double-tap skimming in which victims submit card data to an attacker-controlled form before being redirected to the legitimate payment flow, and extensive client-side form monitoring to capture payment and billing information. The tooling attributed to this actor has supported multiple ecommerce and CMS platforms, including Magento, PrestaShop, WordPress, and OpenCart, and multiple injection modes such as replacement, overlay, popup, and off-screen substitution. The framework has also included logic to detect store administrators and suppress malicious behavior when operators are logged in, indicating deliberate defense evasion. MagentoCore’s operations demonstrate strong post-compromise capability within web applications, including manipulation of checkout interfaces, persistence in compromised storefront code, and covert exfiltration of stolen customer data disguised as benign web traffic. Reported campaigns have targeted online retailers and ecommerce environments, including major multinational retail brands, and have focused on harvesting payment-card data and related customer information for criminal monetization.
