Automated Libra, also associated with the PurpleUrchin campaign, is a South African-based cloud threat actor focused on freejacking for cryptocurrency mining. The group abuses free-tier and limited-time trial resources from cloud and application-hosting providers, creating large volumes of accounts and rapidly deploying mining workloads while avoiding payment. Its operations have been traced back to at least 2019. The actor is notable for heavy use of DevOps-style automation and containerized tooling to industrialize account creation and resource abuse. Observed tradecraft includes automated registration on cloud and developer platforms, CAPTCHA bypass using simple image-analysis techniques, automated retrieval of email verification codes, generation of access tokens, setup of repositories and workflows, and orchestration of mining deployment through CI/CD-style pipelines. Automated Libra has also been linked to automation supporting cryptocurrency handling and trading across multiple exchanges. The PurpleUrchin activity attributed to Automated Libra involved creation of more than 130,000 accounts across services including cloud hosting and developer platforms. The group has been associated with a “play and run” model in which it consumes cloud resources and leaves unpaid balances, with reporting indicating likely use of fake identities and fake or stolen payment cards. The actor’s behavior is financially motivated and centered on monetizing fraudulently obtained compute resources rather than traditional espionage or destructive intrusion objectives. Automated Libra should be distinguished from other Redis-targeting worms and cryptomining groups; no known links have been established between this actor and groups such as TeamTNT, WatchDog, Kinsing, Rocke, or 8220 in the supplied facts.

Cloud-focused freejacking/cryptomining activity abusing free/limited cloud trials and "Play and Run" non-payment tactics. Uses heavy DevOps automation (CI/CD), containerized account creation at scale (e.g., GitHub/Heroku), simple CAPTCHA bypass via image analysis, and GitHub Actions/workflows to execute mining containers and scripts; also automates crypto trading across exchanges.
