The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) is an Uzbek Islamist militant organization with historical ties to al-Qaeda and the Taliban. It conducted the 1999 and 2000 Batken incursions into southern Kyrgyzstan, taking hostages and demonstrating the ability of Afghanistan-linked militant networks to project insecurity into Central Asia. The group has recruited among Uzbek labor migrants. In 2015, a faction of the IMU pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. IMU members have also been reported among forces used by Afghanistan's Taliban authorities in law-enforcement and army units.
