An as-yet unattributed threat actor or set of opportunistic threat actors has been observed exploiting CVE-2025-53690, a critical ViewState deserialization vulnerability affecting Sitecore Experience Manager, Experience Platform, and Experience Commerce. The activity abused exposed ASP.NET machine keys that had been published in legacy Sitecore deployment guidance, enabling remote code execution against vulnerable Sitecore servers. Observed tradecraft indicates exploitation of unauthenticated ViewState handling in Sitecore, particularly through a page that exposed a usable ViewState attack surface. The intrusion pattern is consistent with opportunistic exploitation of insecure key management rather than a clearly established, coordinated campaign. High-confidence reporting indicates active exploitation and remote code execution, with the broader risk profile including persistence and stealth on compromised servers. Attribution to a specific named cluster, nation-state, or criminal organization is currently not available.
