Stophaus is a Russian-based anti-Spamhaus threat group associated with the massive distributed denial-of-service campaign launched against The Spamhaus Project in March 2013. The group emerged from individuals with grievances related to Spamhaus blocklisting of cybercrime-linked hosting, spam, and botnet operations. Its activity is best known for large-scale DDoS operations that initially targeted Spamhaus web, mail, and name-service infrastructure and then expanded to supporting networks, services, and Internet exchanges, causing broader internet disruption. Available reporting ties the operation to multiple conspirators, including a Dutch national living in Spain who was accused of leading and orchestrating the attack, as well as additional participants identified in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. Stophaus is characterized primarily by disruptive network attacks rather than espionage or financially motivated extortion activity.
