WRECKSTEEL is a malware-associated activity cluster referenced in relation to Ukrainian-targeting intrusion activity. It has been compared against CERT-UA tracked tradecraft involving a VBS-to-PowerShell stealer chain, but the available evidence only supports a partial overlap and does not establish that all observed campaigns belong to the same actor. Reported activity associated with this cluster used phishing lures aimed at Ukrainian-speaking organizations and delivered malicious shortcut files disguised as document attachments. Execution relied on hidden PowerShell launched from the shortcut, retrieval of a second-stage script over HTTP through the WinHttp COM interface, and in-memory execution via ScriptBlock creation and dot-sourcing, indicating a fileless post-delivery chain designed to reduce on-disk artifacts. Observed tradecraft also included defense-evasion and masquerading techniques such as double extensions, deceptive document icons, window hiding, Cyrillic homoglyphs in displayed filenames, and size inflation through padding to make shortcut files appear more plausible. The activity has been assessed as unattributed and more consistent with a mid-tier cybercriminal or pay-per-install operation than a confirmed nation-state intrusion set. High-confidence reporting does not support a definitive country attribution, formal sub-group structure, or broader alias set beyond WRECKSTEEL.
