Grum, also known as Grum botnet, was a spam-focused botnet associated with large-scale junk email distribution. It was observed driving major increases in global spam volume and at times accounted for more than a quarter of all spam activity seen in telemetry. Reporting linked a sharp rise in its output to a significant surge in worldwide unsolicited email traffic, alongside concurrent activity from Rustock. Grum’s known operational role in the available evidence is bulk spam delivery rather than ransomware, espionage, or destructive intrusion activity. The observed campaigns indicate high-volume abuse of compromised systems for email distribution and coordination within the broader spam botnet ecosystem.
