Rock Phish was a prolific criminal phishing gang active from 2006 until the summer of 2008. It was a major precursor to later large-scale phishing operations and is widely associated with the use of fast-flux infrastructure to prolong the availability of phishing sites and complicate takedown efforts. The group specialized in credential-harvesting campaigns aimed at online account compromise and financial theft, using distributed hosting and botnet-backed infrastructure to keep fraudulent sites online. Security researchers have linked Rock Phish conceptually to the later Avalanche operation, with some assessing Avalanche as a next-generation evolution of tooling or tradecraft developed by Rock Phish’s creators. Rock Phish is best understood as an organized cybercriminal actor focused on scalable phishing operations, infrastructure resilience, and theft of victim credentials for downstream fraud.
