The Armed Islamic Group, commonly known by its French acronym GIA, was an Algerian Sunni Islamist militant and terrorist organization active primarily during the Algerian Civil War in the 1990s. It is widely associated with violent insurgent activity against the Algerian state as well as attacks on civilians, intellectuals, journalists, artists, and other individuals it regarded as enemies of its extremist religious and political agenda. The group became notorious for assassinations, massacres, kidnappings, and bombings, and was one of the most brutal factions operating in Algeria during that period. GIA is not a cyber threat actor and is not known for conducting cyber operations. Its activity is best characterized as terrorism motivated by extremist ideology rather than financially motivated or espionage-driven intrusion activity.
