Nokoyawa is a Windows ransomware operation and malware family first identified in early 2022. It conducts double-extortion attacks, exfiltrating sensitive data before encrypting victim files and threatening public disclosure unless a ransom is paid. The malware targets 64-bit Windows systems and has code and lineage connections to Karma and the Nemty ransomware lineage. A later Rust-based Nokoyawa 2.0 implementation uses Curve25519 and Salsa20, supports configurable encryption behavior and skip lists, and employs partial encryption of larger files to increase execution speed. Nokoyawa activity has been linked to exploitation of the Windows Common Log File System elevation-of-privilege vulnerability CVE-2023-28252, enabling attackers to obtain SYSTEM-level privileges before ransomware deployment. Researchers have also reported operational overlap or possible cooperation involving Nokoyawa and other ransomware actors, including Play and Snatch, but these relationships are not definitively established.
