Vice Society, also tracked as VICE SPIDER, Vanilla Tempest, DEV-0832, and Rapid Brigantine, is a financially motivated cybercriminal threat group active since at least mid-2022. The group is associated with ransomware deployment and has been linked to operations involving Rhysida, BlackCat, Zeppelin, and Quantum Locker. It has also been tied to the Lorem Ipsum intrusion ecosystem and related loader activity. The actor has demonstrated flexibility in initial access and malware delivery, including the use of social-engineering lures that impersonate software or browser security updates and direct victims to execute malicious commands. Observed tradecraft includes staged payload delivery, use of legitimate runtimes and signed binaries to blend malicious execution with normal system activity, and DLL sideloading to launch malicious components. The group has used custom droppers and loaders that reconstruct embedded payloads, establish persistence through autorun mechanisms, and retrieve command-and-control information through dead-drop resolver techniques on third-party platforms. Operational characteristics attributed to this actor include anti-analysis measures such as hidden execution, execution-policy bypass, anti-debug checks, and deliberate sleep delays. Reporting also links the group to post-exploitation tooling overlap with Oyster, Supper, and MeowBackConn, as well as eventual ransomware deployment. The actor’s behavior indicates a mature intrusion lifecycle spanning initial access, persistence, defense evasion, post-exploitation, and data theft or ransomware monetization. No high-confidence country of origin or victim-country pattern is directly established here.
