The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), also referred to as azawad_liberation_front_(fla), is a Tuareg rebel group active in northern Mali. It has been involved in the long-running insurgency in the Azawad region and has controlled territory in northern Mali for extended periods. The group has demonstrated adaptation to contemporary battlefield technologies, including the operational use of fiber-optic first-person-view drones in attacks against Malian armed forces and Russian Africa Corps elements. Publicly documented reporting attributes to the group a June 2025 drone strike on a convoy in northern Mali, illustrating an ability to integrate low-cost uncrewed systems into insurgent operations. The group has also been reported to coordinate attacks with Jamaat Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), indicating tactical cooperation with other anti-state armed actors in the Sahel. Its activities are consistent with insurgent and rebel warfare focused on contesting state control, conducting attacks on military targets, and exploiting evolving drone capabilities for precision strikes and battlefield propaganda. Available information supports characterization of the FLA as a non-state militant actor pursuing separatist or insurgent objectives in Mali rather than a financially motivated cyber or criminal enterprise.
