Operation Navy Ghost is a North Korea-linked software supply-chain campaign targeting developers through trojanized npm packages that impersonate Rollup polyfill tooling and related JavaScript utilities. The activity has been associated with Lazarus-linked tradecraft and overlaps with the broader Contagious Interview ecosystem, including similarities to malware such as BeaverTail and OtterCookie. The campaign used deceptive package metadata and staged dependencies to blend into the npm ecosystem and trigger hidden install-time execution. Its infection chain relied on multi-stage JavaScript payload delivery, including retrieval of remote code and execution of encrypted follow-on components. The malware incorporated environment-awareness checks designed to avoid execution in cloud development environments, sandboxes, serverless runtimes, and analysis systems, indicating deliberate defense-evasion measures. Post-compromise functionality included remote interactive host control and arbitrary command execution. Observed capabilities also included screenshot capture, process termination, clipboard monitoring, browser data theft, cryptocurrency wallet theft, and collection of files of interest. The malware additionally targeted developer-centric data stores and configurations, including source-code-adjacent secrets, editor history, cloud credentials, SSH material, shell configuration, and AI tooling configuration, making developer workstations and CI/build systems especially attractive targets. The operation is notable for combining supply-chain initial access with broad post-exploitation and data-theft objectives. Its use of package impersonation, staged loaders, anti-analysis checks, and extensive collection from developer environments is consistent with North Korean financially motivated intrusion activity that seeks both operational access and theft of valuable credentials and digital assets.
