X3D MINER is a financially motivated cybercriminal activity cluster associated with dual-monetization malware operations that combine information stealing and illicit cryptocurrency mining. The moniker appears in operator notifications for new infections and is linked to campaigns using the XMRig miner alongside the Vidar infostealer, with indications of affiliation to the Vidar malware-as-a-service ecosystem and use of the Factory-v3 builder framework. The activity has targeted consumer and small-to-medium business victims worldwide, with observed concentration in the United States and parts of the European Union. Initial access has been obtained through malvertising and fake cracked-software lures delivered in password-protected archives. The infection chain uses Go-based loaders that deploy both Vidar and XMRig, enabling theft of browser credentials, cookies, and cryptocurrency wallet data while simultaneously monetizing victim systems through Monero mining. Operational tradecraft includes multiple defense-evasion techniques such as oversized null-byte padding to hinder analysis, use of fraudulent or unauthorized code-signing certificates impersonating legitimate brands, DLL sideloading through fake Defender-related components, and an in-memory AMSI bypass. The malware also gathers victim geolocation data for operator awareness and sends infection notifications through Telegram. Persistence has been established through registry autoruns and scheduled tasks. Observed capabilities therefore include initial access via social engineering-themed malware delivery, credential theft, crypto-theft, persistence, exfiltration, DLL sideloading, and defense evasion. A later observed variant retained the same overall builder lineage, delivery pattern, Telegram-based operator workflow, and payload behavior while changing the impersonated certificate branding and command-and-control infrastructure. X3D MINER is best understood as a financially motivated malware operation or affiliate cluster centered on commodity stealer deployment and cryptomining rather than a nation-state intrusion set.
