JadeProx is a China-nexus intrusion cluster associated with cyber-espionage activity targeting government, healthcare, and education organizations across Asia and Latin America. The cluster has been linked to intrusions involving a Vietnamese public hospital, Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, multiple Hong Kong educational institutions, and phishing activity themed around Honduras and Venezuela. Analysts have noted tactical and tooling overlap with multiple Chinese threat ecosystems, but the activity has not been conclusively mapped to a single previously known group. A defining feature of JadeProx is its use of TriBack Loader, a custom Windows loader delivered through DLL sideloading chains that pair signed executables with malicious libraries and encrypted payloads. Observed variants decrypt and execute shellcode through Win32 callback and thread-creation mechanisms selected for stealth, including techniques such as InitOnceExecuteOnce, TimerQueue callbacks, and EtwpCreateEtwThread. Multiple TriBack variants have delivered AdaptixC2, while another delivered the Beagle backdoor through Donut-based shellcode execution. Repeated implementation patterns across variants suggest a custom loader-building workflow. JadeProx has demonstrated broad operational capability beyond malware delivery. Observed activity includes phishing and credential-harvesting infrastructure, bulk vulnerability scanning, exploitation follow-up against internet-facing systems, webshell-enabled access, tunneling, and post-compromise proxying. Tooling associated with the cluster includes offensive tunneling and relay utilities, scanning frameworks, and measures intended to suppress cloud-hosted security monitoring. In Hong Kong-focused operations, the cluster conducted large-scale scanning of education-related targets and attempted exploitation of several high-severity vulnerabilities, including CVE-2018-11511, CVE-2021-24139, CVE-2021-31755, and CVE-2021-32305. Additional lures have impersonated trusted software and public-sector or financial entities to support malware delivery or credential collection. The cluster’s victimology, infrastructure patterns, Chinese-language artifacts, and overlap with known China-aligned tradecraft support assessment of a China nexus. The dominant pattern is intelligence collection and access operations against public-sector and institutional targets rather than financially motivated ransomware activity.
