RCSession is a Windows remote access trojan associated with the BRONZE PRESIDENT espionage group, a likely PRC-linked threat actor focused on long-term political espionage against NGOs, political entities, and law-enforcement organizations in South and East Asia. It has been described as a basic RAT used during intrusions after initial compromise, and reporting has indicated it may be closely tied to BRONZE PRESIDENT operations.
RCSession has been observed installed via DLL side-loading and executed through process hollowing, including launching from a hollowed legitimate Windows process and running inside another trusted Windows installer process to reduce visibility. It can bypass User Account Control to gain elevated privileges and stores an obfuscated configuration in the Windows Registry, supporting both concealment and persistence of operational settings.
Functionally, RCSession supports command-and-control over both TCP and UDP and uses encrypted beaconing to communicate with its controllers. On compromised hosts it can gather system owner information, including the current user context and whether the account has administrative privileges, and it can capture screenshots for operator collection. These behaviors align with post-compromise reconnaissance, privilege escalation, defense evasion, and interactive remote access in targeted intrusions.
