lsassexe_(danti_backdoor) is a custom backdoor deployed by the Danti APT group, which is related to NetTraveller and DragonOK. It is typically delivered via spear-phishing campaigns targeting government and diplomatic organizations in Asia, especially India, as well as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Myanmar, Nepal, and the Philippines. The infection vector involves malicious DOCX attachments exploiting CVE-2015-2545 (EPS vulnerability in Microsoft Office), which executes custom shellcode to drop the backdoor. The malware is capable of system reconnaissance, privilege escalation, and data exfiltration. It communicates with C2 infrastructure using dynamic DNS domains such as newsupdate.dynssl.com and dnsnews.dns05.com. The backdoor is often accompanied by other payloads such as keyloggers and data theft tools, and may use legitimate signed binaries for DLL side-loading. Danti has demonstrated the ability to modify its exploits to evade antivirus detection. Indicators of compromise include specific hashes, C2 domains, and spear-phishing emails with decoy documents relevant to targeted entities.
