RIPCOY is a malware component identified by Trend Micro in campaigns attributed to the China-linked threat actor Earth Baxia. It was observed in spear-phishing operations targeting government organizations in Taiwan and other Asia-Pacific countries, with broader targeting across government, telecommunications, and energy entities in Taiwan, South Korea, the Philippines, and Vietnam. In the reported infection chain, RIPCOY was a decoy MSC file delivered inside a ZIP archive. When a user double-clicked the file, embedded obfuscated VBScript attempted to download multiple files from public cloud services, typically Amazon Web Services (AWS), using the GrimResource technique. Trend Micro associated RIPCOY with the same activity cluster that also used customized Cobalt Strike, EAGLEDOOR, DULLDOWN, and recent SWORDLDR samples. A reported RIPCOY sample was identified as oncesvc.dll with SHA-256 04b336c3bcfe027436f36dfc73a173c37c66288c7160651b11561b39ce2cd25e.
