MURKYTOUR is a backdoor associated with Iran-nexus cyber espionage activity targeting Israel. It was observed in October 2024 in a job-themed social engineering campaign attributed to UNC2428, which impersonated an Israeli defense contractor as part of a fake recruitment workflow. The operation used a deceptive installer with a graphical interface to collect victim information and resumes while covertly deploying the malware, after which MURKYTOUR was launched in the background to provide persistent access to compromised systems. The activity has been noted as overlapping with operations attributed to Black Shadow, an Iranian threat actor believed to operate on behalf of the Ministry of Intelligence and Security. MURKYTOUR is part of a broader pattern of Iranian intrusion activity in the region characterized by tailored lures, custom malware, and long-term intelligence collection against sectors including government, defense-related organizations, healthcare, finance, transportation, communications, academia, tourism, and technology. Components similar to the MURKYTOUR backdoor family have also been cited in discussions of increasingly sophisticated Iranian tooling emerging from recent regional cyber conflict.
