It is our hypothesis that these legitimate compromised sites were all compromised sometime after early November using CVE-2015-7501 [7,8] and publicly available exploit code [9].

While monitoring the Rekaf C2 we observed over two thousand unique infections.
8 distinct techniques documented for this family, organized by ATT&CK tactic.
Prior to submitting the collected information to C2... Rekaf HTTP POST C2 Beacon. If the server responds with an encoded string 'Login Server Success' then the Rekaf bot will continue to perform HTTP GET requests to the server until it receives a command.
In one instance related to this cluster of activity, we observed Bergard receive instructions from its C2 to retrieve a PNG file containing an encoded PlugX payload... Rekaf supported commands... upload: Download file from C2 ... update: Retrieve an updated payload.

Bassos-associated Trojan executed through DLL search-order hijacking using a signed iefix.exe and malicious dbgeng.dll. It collects and exfiltrates system information, encodes communications using a MAC-address-derived byte, polls for commands, maintains debug logs, and can drop embedded executables. Monitoring revealed more than 2,000 unique infections. Bassos attribution to C0d0s0 remains tentative.
Rekaf is a trojan/backdoor delivered in the Bassos campaign. It uses DLL search order hijacking for execution, collects host information, communicates over HTTP with encoded beacons, supports file transfer, command execution, and payload updates, and contains embedded PE files for possible deployment.
