The root cause was a behavioral mismatch in how archive mode -a interacts with -L symlink dereferencing, particularly whether archive semantics preserve links via -d or allow dereferencing to take precedence, exposing a subtle but operationally significant incompatibility in Ubuntu's build toolchain.
