Researchers reported multiple intrusion attempts in which attackers used the ClickFix social-engineering lure to trick users into running a malicious command, leading to the download and execution of HijackLoader. In the observed infection chains, HijackLoader abused DLL hijacking and module stomping alongside legitimate signed binaries to deploy DeerStealer, an information-stealing malware also marketed as XFiles Spyware.
DeerStealer was described as a malware-as-a-service offering sold by the dark-web user LuciferXfiles, with capabilities to steal browser credentials, cryptocurrency wallets, messenger and VPN data, FTP and email client information, gaming and remote-access application data, and clipboard contents for cryptocurrency theft. Researchers said the malware uses heavy obfuscation, including control-flow manipulation and per-sample virtual-machine-based string decryption, and communicates with command-and-control servers over HTTPS while sending host fingerprinting data such as MachineGuid, install timestamps, and processor details; reporting also noted ongoing HijackLoader updates and DeerStealer feature expansion plans including macOS support and AI-assisted functionality.

eSentire published an analysis detailing the observed May 2025 attack chains, including HijackLoader's DLL hijacking and module stomping techniques and DeerStealer's capabilities and MaaS offering. The report also documented DeerStealer's dark-web marketing by the user LuciferXfiles and its subscription tiers.
Throughout May 2025, eSentire observed several intrusion attempts in which ClickFix social engineering tricked victims into running a malicious command that downloaded and executed HijackLoader. In many of those observed chains, DeerStealer/XFiles Spyware was the final payload.
