Kaspersky reported an active cyber-espionage campaign targeting government, agriculture, and transportation organizations in Donetsk, Lugansk, and Crimea. The operation used politically themed lure ZIP archives containing decoy documents and malicious double-extension .LNK files, which fetched an MSI installer and deployed a previously unseen PowerShell backdoor called PowerMagic. The malware established persistence, accepted attacker-supplied PowerShell commands, and exfiltrated results through cloud services including Dropbox and OneDrive using OAuth refresh tokens.
Investigators also found the same victims infected with a more advanced modular framework named CommonMagic, which was likely delivered through PowerMagic and used OneDrive and the Microsoft Graph API for command-and-control. CommonMagic was built from multiple executables communicating over named pipes, protected traffic with a modified RC5Simple implementation, and included plugins for screenshot capture and theft of documents from attached USB devices. Kaspersky said it found no direct ties to previously known threat actors and assessed the campaign remained active at the time of disclosure.
