Bitdefender reported that LiquorBot, a Mirai-derived IoT botnet rewritten in Go, infected home routers and other smart devices while expanding steadily with frequent updates and new exploits. First observed in May 2019, the malware targeted multiple CPU architectures including ARM, ARM64, x86, x64, and MIPS, and spread through a mix of known vulnerabilities and SSH brute-forcing using 82 username-password combinations.
In October 2019, the operators added a Monero cryptomining module, attempting to monetize compromised SOHO devices despite their limited processing power. Researchers said the mining effort was largely ineffective because routers and similar low-powered hardware cannot generate meaningful cryptocurrency returns, making LiquorBot another example of an IoT botnet pursuing cryptomining on devices poorly suited to the task.

Bitdefender released a report detailing LiquorBot's behavior, architecture support, exploitation methods, and cryptomining capability the day before ZDNet's coverage.
In October 2019, LiquorBot was updated with a module that attempted to mine Monero on infected devices, despite the limited computing power of SOHO routers and similar hardware.
Bitdefender first spotted the Mirai-derived LiquorBot botnet in May 2019 infecting home routers and other IoT devices using known vulnerabilities and SSH brute-forcing.
