Trend Micro reported that the NetDooka malware framework was being distributed through the PrivateLoader pay-per-install service, with infections often beginning after users downloaded pirated software. The multi-stage chain included a loader, several droppers, an optional kernel-mode protection driver, and a final remote access trojan (RAT). Once installed, NetDooka established persistence through scheduled tasks, generated a victim session ID in config.cfg, and used a custom command-and-control protocol to register infected hosts and receive instructions.
The final RAT provided attackers with broad post-compromise capabilities, including remote shell access, browser data theft, screenshots, keylogging, file transfer, DDoS functions, and remote desktop control. Trend Micro said the framework also attempted to disable defenses by uninstalling antivirus products, blocking security vendor domains through the hosts file, and protecting the RAT with a mini-filter driver designed to prevent file deletion and process termination. Researchers assessed the malware as still under development, with functionality varying across observed versions.
