Red Hat released multiple Moderate security advisories for assertj-core in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 channels to address CVE-2026-24400, an XML External Entity (XXE) vulnerability in AssertJ. The flaw affects versions from 1.4.0 through before 3.27.7 and stems from org.assertj.core.util.xml.XmlStringPrettyFormatter, where toXmlDocument(String) uses a default DocumentBuilderFactory without disabling DTDs or external entities. Applications that pass untrusted XML to isXmlEqualTo(CharSequence) or xmlPrettyFormat(String) could be exposed to information disclosure, server-side request forgery, or denial of service through entity expansion.
The updates were published across several RHEL 9 product lines, including RHEL 9.2, 9.4, and 9.6 support and SAP-related channels, under advisories RHSA-2026:58956, RHSA-2026:58957, and RHSA-2026:58949. Red Hat shipped updated packages such as assertj-core-3.19.0-5.el9_2.2, assertj-core-3.19.0-5.el9_4.2, and assertj-core-3.19.0-9.el9_6.1 for multiple architectures. Upstream, AssertJ fixed the issue in 3.27.7, deprecated XmlStringPrettyFormatter in that release, and removed it in 4.0, while the older isXmlEqualTo(CharSequence) API had already been deprecated in favor of XMLUnit.

Red Hat opened Bugzilla entry 2433116 to track CVE-2026-24400, describing an XXE flaw in AssertJ that could enable information disclosure, SSRF, or denial of service when untrusted XML is processed.
AssertJ fixed the XXE vulnerability in version 3.27.7. In the same release, it also deprecated XmlStringPrettyFormatter, the component containing the vulnerable XML parsing behavior.
AssertJ deprecated the isXmlEqualTo(CharSequence) assertion in version 3.18.0 and recommended XMLUnit instead. The deprecated assertion was one of the paths through which untrusted XML could reach the vulnerable formatter.
The vulnerable AssertJ code path for XML processing is present starting in version 1.4.0, making releases from 1.4.0 up to but not including 3.27.7 affected by CVE-2026-24400.
