Linux kernel maintainers resolved CVE-2021-47579, an OverlayFS flaw that can trigger a WARN_ON condition while creating an OverlayFS work directory on a cgroup v2 filesystem. The condition occurs because cgroup2 mkdir can return without instantiating the newly created dentry, leaving ovl_create_real() to encounter an unexpected state.
The remediation calls ovl_mkdir_real() directly from ovl_workdir_create() and rejects the unsupported filesystem behavior earlier in setup. Fixes are available in Linux kernel versions 4.19.222, 5.4.168, 5.10.88, 5.15.11, and later stable releases; Red Hat rated the issue CVSS 4.1 (Low) and released fixes for RHEL 8 and 9 kernel packages, while RHEL 9 kernel-rt remained affected.

Red Hat released RHSA-2024:5101 for the RHEL 8 kernel and RHSA-2024:5102 for the RHEL 8 kernel-rt, addressing CVE-2021-47579.
Red Hat released RHSA-2024:2394, fixing CVE-2021-47579 in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 kernel package.
The Linux kernel CVE team assigned CVE-2021-47579 to an OverlayFS issue where cgroup2 directory creation can leave a new dentry without an inode and trigger a WARN_ON condition. Upstream fixes route work-directory creation through ovl_mkdir_real() to reject the unsupported condition earlier.
