OpenAI will wind down its contract to supply models to Cursor after SpaceX acquired Cursor parent Anysphere for approximately $60 billion. OpenAI has proposed November 12, 2026 as the service shutoff date, providing what it described as the maximum contractual notice to limit disruption for developers and enterprises using its models through the AI coding platform.
The company said the decision followed the change of control and was not an allegation that Cursor itself breached OpenAI rules. However, OpenAI cited concerns over alleged prior contractual and terms-of-service violations by Elon Musk-affiliated companies, including Twitter and xAI, and said it could not be confident SpaceX would comply with its terms. The cutoff will also prevent direct Cursor integration of OpenAI's forthcoming Astra model, whose agentic coding and cybersecurity capabilities were assessed internally as potentially nearing the Critical cyber-capability threshold; Cursor is expected to retain offerings from Anthropic, Google, and SpaceXAI.

On August 28, OpenAI notified SpaceX that it intended to wind down its contract supplying models to Cursor, invoking a limited change-of-control cancellation provision. It froze future model supply, including Astra, while allowing existing OpenAI models to remain available during the contractual notice period.
SpaceX completed an approximately $60 billion acquisition of Anysphere, Cursor's parent company. OpenAI subsequently treated Cursor as part of the same corporate family as xAI for model-access risk decisions.
OpenAI said Elon Musk admitted under oath earlier in 2026 that xAI had violated OpenAI's terms of service. The content states Musk said it was “partly” true that xAI distilled OpenAI technology.
Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown said Cursor remained a trusted partner and that Anthropic would continue increasing compute to support Claude models in Cursor, despite OpenAI's plan to end Cursor's direct model access.
OpenAI disclosed internal Astra evaluations showing significant advances in agentic coding and cybersecurity capabilities, and said it could not rule out the model reaching its Critical cyber-capability threshold.
OpenAI said Twitter violated the terms of its contract with OpenAI after Elon Musk acquired the company. The reporting also stated that Musk ended OpenAI's paid license to Twitter data.
