Wiz Research attributed an evolved Linux malware campaign to the Romanian-speaking Diicot group, also known as Mexals. The operators compromise OpenSSH-exposed hosts using weak credentials, deploy an Update payload for persistence, establish reverse-shell access, and scan and brute-force additional SSH targets to propagate across environments. The activity follows the previously documented resurgence of the Mexals cryptojacking operation.
The malware creates cron-based persistence, allowing payloads to execute repeatedly or after system restart—a common Unix persistence technique tracked as MITRE ATT&CK T1053.003. Diicot differentiates cloud-associated Linux distributions from other systems, focusing propagation efforts on cloud environments while deploying customized XMRig-based Monero miners on non-cloud hosts. The campaign also uses HTTP command-and-control, rapidly rotated infrastructure, staged payloads, and modified UPX headers and checksums to hinder analysis; researchers linked it to more than $16,000 in Monero revenue and suspected additional Zephyr Protocol mining activity.

A new version of the abc123 payload, containing a custom XMRig-based miner and embedded Update payload, was uploaded on December 5, 2024.
The latest Diicot infrastructure was first observed around October 12, 2024.
Researchers identified 91.92.250[.]6 as a likely Diicot payload server that was active from May 1 through September 26, 2024.
