Elastic Security Labs identified OXLOADER, a previously undocumented Windows loader used in a malvertising campaign to deploy the CASTLESTEALER information stealer. Malicious Google Ads impersonating Node.js redirected primarily U.S.-based targets through a redirector to Storj-hosted batch scripts, which downloaded OXLOADER and attempted to elevate its privileges. Geographic exclusions for Commonwealth of Independent States countries and Russian-language systems indicate a likely financially motivated, Russian-speaking operator.
OXLOADER uses layered obfuscation, self-modifying decryption stubs, anti-sandbox checks, and runtime API resolution to evade detection. It stages shellcode in a PE file's .reloc section, adds an RWX .xtext section to a copied Windows DLL for execution, and uses DonutLoader to execute CASTLESTEALER as an in-memory .NET payload. The operation illustrates MITRE ATT&CK Resource Development activity, including malvertising, acquired hosting, and staged malware capabilities; Elastic reported low static and sandbox detection rates and released YARA rules and indicators for detection.

Google removed the advertiser and associated malicious ad campaigns. The advertiser had been registered under the verified name ВОЛОДИМИР ТЕРЕЩЕНКО and listed as based in Ukraine, though Elastic could not verify the operator's identity.
A malvertising campaign impersonating Node.js LTS releases was last observed displaying malicious Google Ads. The ads redirected victims through a redirector to Storj-hosted batch scripts that downloaded and elevated OXLOADER.
MITRE ATT&CK created the Resource Development tactic, TA0042, covering adversary efforts to establish, obtain, compromise, develop, and stage resources for operations.
Elastic Security Labs identified the previously undocumented Windows loader OXLOADER in an active campaign affecting an Elastic customer. The loader used anti-analysis measures and DonutLoader to execute the CASTLESTEALER information stealer in memory; Elastic also published YARA rules and indicators for the activity.
MITRE ATT&CK last modified the Resource Development tactic entry, including its techniques and sub-techniques for infrastructure, accounts, capabilities, content, and staging.
