Google Privacy Policy Opens Path for AI-Shared Gmail and Photos Data to Influence Ads

Google revised its privacy policy to clarify that information users share across services for personalized AI experiences may influence targeted advertising. The change replaces language that excluded Gmail, Drive, and Photos content from ad personalization with an exception for data users permit other Google services to access. Google's opt-in Personal Intelligence feature connects Google apps to Gemini and AI search experiences to generate tailored responses, creating a potential indirect path from private content to advertising context. Google says ads are not based directly on Gmail inboxes or Photos libraries and that sensitive information will not be used to tailor ads.
The policy raises a privacy and data-governance concern, rather than documenting a security breach: content excluded from ad personalization by default could contribute to advertising after users authorize cross-service AI access. Reporting highlights sponsored content in AI search and the possibility that personalized responses influence the context in which ads appear, without establishing direct inbox-based targeting. Organizations should review permitted AI app connections and employee guidance for sharing business information. Users can disconnect individual apps from Personal Intelligence or disable Personalized Recommendations through Search Services Personalization settings.
