ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows a local, authorized attacker to escalate privileges, potentially gaining SYSTEM-level access. This could enable the attacker to execute arbitrary code, install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

No specific mitigations are documented beyond applying the official Microsoft patch. As a general precaution, restrict local access to trusted users and monitor for abnormal privilege escalation attempts until the patch is applied.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply the security updates released by Microsoft in July 2025 Patch Tuesday. Ensure all affected systems are updated to the latest version as provided by Microsoft to address this double free vulnerability.
