Prototype Pollution in apidoc-core preProcess() (CVE-2025-13158)

IdentifiersCVE-2025-13158CWE-1321· Improperly Controlled Modification…

CVE-2025-13158 is a prototype pollution vulnerability in apidoc-core versions 0.2.0 and later. The vulnerability exists in the preProcess() function of several worker modules (api_group.js, api_param_title.js, api_use.js, and api_permission.js), where malformed data structures, particularly those containing the 'define' property, are improperly handled. This allows remote attackers to modify JavaScript object prototypes, potentially corrupting the prototype chain and leading to denial of service or unintended application behavior.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows remote attackers to modify the prototype of core JavaScript objects, which can result in denial of service, application crashes, or the introduction of unintended behavior in applications that rely on prototype chain integrity. The vulnerability is critical (CVSS 9.3) and can be exploited without authentication or user interaction.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Sanitize all incoming data structures to prevent prototype pollution, particularly by filtering or blocking the 'define' property and other potentially dangerous keys. Avoid processing untrusted input directly in object assignment or merge operations. Monitor for published patches and apply them promptly.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Update apidoc-core to a patched version that properly sanitizes and validates incoming data structures, especially those containing the 'define' property. Ensure that all dependencies are up to date and review application code for similar prototype pollution vectors.
